Around 4:00am this morning, Matthew woke up to hear a light rain. We jumped out of the tent and had enough time to cover our bikes and take down the laundry before it really started to rain. We were warm and comfortable inside our tent.
We left the Blackwater Campground near Central Hill around 10:15 this a.m., and made it to Dendron, VA before it clouded up and we started to hear thunder. We scurried over to the Post Office and have taken shelter from the storm in their vestibule. Thankfully, it's big enough for both of us, as well as our bikes and trailers. Once the lightning moves on, and the rain let's up, we'll roll. We do have full raingear for ourselves, (including rainproof shoe covers) and our trailers are waterproof, as well. Matthew secretly hoped that we'd never have to break out the rain booties, and I'm celebrating our fiirst rainstorm. In the musical version of our trip, this is a variation on the main theme of "Into the Wind" called "Singing out of the Rain". Which hopefully will be followed by "Here Comes the Sun".
We passed 1,000 miles earlier today--another big milestone for us. Matthew set up the camera and took our picture near some really big silos. We're definitely out of the coastal plains and into rural farmland and horse country. The scenery is different, but very interesting. The red-wing blackbirds have been replaced by bluebirds the last few days.
Hope the weather is better in your neighborhood. Happy Mother's Day!

At one thousand miles
Our journey has just begun
More joy still to come
Holy crap! 1,000 miles! What an accomplishment, you guys are doing great. I read the blog every morning (at work - shhhhhhhhhhhhh). You know, you remember that work thing... :-) boo-hisssss
Congrats on the first 1K! Now I'd like to hear more about the equipment. How is the hardware holding up? Any struggles, unexpected breaks? What's working better then expected, what's working poorly? Do you have the right gear ratios so far? (Wait 'till you get to the Rockies!) What's wearing out?

Congratulations on 1K miles!!!
Katie says "Hi". She left this morning for China (along with 300 of her closest friends in the UGA marching band).
I do hope I get to see a picture of Matthew in his rain booties.
