Today (Thursday, May 11) we rode through the Dismal Swamp. I was amazed at
how un-Dismal it is. The water ranges from black to kelly green, depending
on the amount of algae in the water. Along the route we saw dozens of
turtles, sunning themselves on logs, and we surprised nearly a half-dozen
egrets or white herons as we rode through the area. What a fabulous feeling
to watch these birds rise up in flight and disappear into the swamp. I
managed to capture one in this picture. He's sitting near the top third of
the photo, on the left. The water here is black, and so glassy that it's
like a mirror. The traffic roars through here, and there's no shoulder, but
we managed to stay safe. I wanted to tell them all to slow down, roll down
the windows, and at least listen to the bird calls if you can't take a
minute to stop!
