When the bridge that we were supposed to cross was closed, we should have
known we were in trouble. But we decided we could squeak through, and
shortly after that, some friendly local policemen added almost 10 miles
to our already 60 mile day.

It was bound to happen... A 10 mile detour, that's not too bad. Once when we were driving to SLC, I-80 was closed west of Cheyenne. The the only detour over the continental divide was US-40 - thats a 159 mile diversion!
...and it was uphill both ways...
Hang in, Nancy, you are looking good and such history - you need to write a book when this journey is over. EZ
