America's Largest Hand-Dug Well

The trains of old needed water, so towns that wanted a railroad depot had to

supply water. Selkirk, KS, boasts the largest hand-dug well in the US, and

there is a restoration project underway on the well. We could not see to

the bottom of the well, at least 125 feet in diameter, lined with native

Kansas limestone bricks as far as we could see (and probably beyond).

There seems to be some competition for the title of "Largest hand-dug well" in the state of Kansas. There is one in Greensburg in south-central Kansas and another one in Seneca in the northeast corner of the state. I copied the following about the Selkirk well from a tourism site for Southwest Kansas called Wild West Country: "Selkirk Hand Dug Well, located 10.5 miles west of Leoti on Hwy. 96 - the only remnant of a once busy Santa Fe railroad line ending in Selkirk and abandoned in 1896. It is 24 ft. in diameter and 102 feet deep."
